This error message only appears when rebooting a system, and then it flashes
rather quickly on the screen and then disappears. Most people running mail
systems rarely reboot. I only discovered the problem because I was forced to
reboot the system. Also, although unconfirmed, it may be isolated to
FreeBSD. Therefore, I am willing to bet that most people don't even know the
phenomena even exists. In any case, it is apparently harmless.

Hello

Yes, as stated in my headline, appers on boot up.
and never seen again. Find nothing in any logfiles, and everything looks
normal and appears to function as usual.
But ..... a bit annoying :-)

As I mentioned in a previous mail. The maintainer might not read this
mailing list and will miss all of your mails. If you want to do things
properly raise a PR for it so that the maintainer is fully aware and can
resolve it.

As it happens it looks like there is a lot of discussion about it
already going on:

Hello
After latest update/upgrade I get this for me strange error on the
dovecot error:t_readlink(var/run/dovecot//dovecot.conf) failed: readlink() failed: No such file or directory
Then : Starting dovecot
What was the previous version of dovecot and what the new version?

I use dovecot-2.3.1 and there is a new version in ports tree 2.3.1_1 which I haven't upgrade yet.

Do you see this error only on your screen or it shows it in logs too? I want to try to reproduce this error and need to know if I need KVM connected to the server.

/var/run/dovecot/dovecot.conf is a link to /usr/local/etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf

Do you have chroot for dovecot? Maybe /var/run/dovecot is not mounted yet when dovecot starts and this is the reason for this message.

It only appears upon boot up; not if it is subsequently stopped and restarted.
There is no mention of the error in the dovecot logs.

I am running the latest version of dovecot and it is not chrooted.
